Thanks Val.
I did it this morning...and it was a good day for me. Though I did get distracted a few times - it was nice to dial down and remember that what is to come is far more important and should orient the values and decisions of my day.
Hope you had a great day.

Hi Ben! I just wanted to thank you for giving your message this weekend. Especially in the sleep deprived state you guys are probably in. ;) I was especially convicted by your comment about setting aside 5 minutes to center on God... and 2 minutes into it making a to-do list. That's me! You're not alone. I would love to listen to God and be obedient. I know He has a perfect plan for me. I just wish I could truly be quiet enough long enough to hear Him. Neon signs would help! ;) Anyway, thanks again for teaching. I needed to hear it. Hug your beautiful family!

Yes, that definitely helps, I didn't know that. There's another similar situation that always made me wonder...how about this one, I'd be surprised if any Christian church adhered to this one...

"As in all the congregations of the saints, 34women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church." 1Corinthians 14:34-35

Christy,

The comments about head coverings were cultural in the sense they were dealing with married women who were not worshiping with their "wedding hats" on - or in our day it would be similar to not wearing your wedding ring. To not wear a head covering was to insinuate one was "available" and thus very disrespectful to the husband and ultimately to God. One of the cardinal rules in understanding scripture is - what does this text say to the original hearers. Which means understanding the "cultural" understandings, norms, values, etc will help then apply the text our day. Hope this helps.

Hi Ben! I was hoping you'd be out here today (yesterday)...as I read this bells were going off in my head. I know this isn't the angle you went with it, but I'm just wondering a bit more about this head-covering thing...I have found myself in situations where I've had to defend the agnostic's claim that Christians "pick and choose" what we want to believe out of the bible. And I must say, it's been a difficult corner to be in. How can we read these passages and just dismiss it as somthing "cultural"? Paul sounds just ADAMANT about this.

Thanks for listening!

Great thoughts. I told my close friends and family not to get me anything for Christmas, instead my wife and I had some great meals with great friends. Don't get me wrong, we still gave and received some of the traditional Christmas gifts but hopefully it can become a process that evolves into a new holiday tradition.

Both of our daughters came home from CC and said what a great job you did this past weekend - so I logged on and got to your first point on self indulgence and the video stopped...the prodigal story is also one of my favorites, so I guess I'll have to buy the CD next weekend to hear the rest of the story!
